Cover of the book, Cinderella's Crimes

In 'Cinderella's Crimes', we're introduced to a Cinderella who is unapologetically vicious and ruthless, marking a stark and refreshing departure from the familiar tale. This novel impresses with its creativity, reshaping a well-known story into something intriguingly new.

Cinna, as Cinderella is known here, leaves the reader torn between empathy and shock. Her fierce, conniving behaviors is a far cry from the traditional demure Cinderella, evoking a character akin to Loki – unpredictable, chaotic, and always scheming. This retelling challenges the norms and presents a protagonist whose loyalties and motives are as enthralling as they are ambiguous.

The structure of the book contributes to its appeal. With a rating of 3.5/5 for enjoyment, the novel is engaging and well-paced, maintaining interest through its alternating points of view. The inclusion of Johann, a small-time thief, adds a fascinating dimension to the story. His perspective, particularly the planning and execution of his heist, injects an element of excitement and unpredictability. The plot scores a 4/5, offering a fresh take on the Cinderella story that impresses with its originality and development, especially through Johann's unexpected narrative role. Character development is effective, earning a 4/5. The story provides just enough detail to keep the narrative moving without leaving gaps. Johann's backstory, while not deeply explored, does not detract from the experience. The writing style, straightforward and unencumbered by excessive layers, is apt for the story, making it accessible and enjoyable, particularly for readers like me who appreciate clarity.

However, the novel scores lower in thought-provoking content and world-building, with 2/5 in each category. While not expected to be deeply thought-provoking, the novel does prompt reflections on the myriad of Cinderella stories I've encountered over time. In terms of world-building, the author relies on the reader's familiarity with the Cinderella setting, allowing for more focus on character and plot development. These lower scores don't reflect badly on the novel, this just was not meant to be a thought provoking story.

Finally, the ending, crucial for any narrative, is well-executed, leaving the reader eager for a sequel without frustration, warranting a 4/5.

Now don't let my overall rating of 3.5/5 fool you. This was a fun read and something I pleased to have read.

The third book comes out soon to be sure to pick up your copies of book 1 and 2 before then!

Happy reading!

Bobbi
