"The School For Good Mothers" by Jessamine Chan: The Book You Can't Put Down

Enjoyment: 5/5 - From start to finish, I was completely engrossed in this book. Despite its weightiness, the narrative was profoundly thought-provoking and endlessly intriguing. As someone gradually discovering a fondness for speculative fiction, The School for Good Mothers drew me in with its unsettling parallels to The Handmaid's Tale, a theme that lingered in my mind long after I turned the last page.

Plot: 4.5/5 - The plot was nearly flawless, earning close to a perfect score. The initial 25% did an excellent job laying the groundwork for the story, but there were occasional moments throughout the remaining 70% at the school where the pace lagged slightly. Despite these minor slowdowns, the narrative's overall strength and the compelling setup make it a compelling and worthwhile read.

Characters: 5/5 - The main character, Freida, is a complex and multifaceted individual who left me grappling with a spectrum of emotions. Love, dislike, pity—these conflicting sentiments added layers to the narrative, making Freida a truly unforgettable character. The depth of the characterizations throughout the book contributed significantly to its overall impact.

Thought-Provoking: 5/5 - Perhaps the most commendable aspect of this book is its ability to captivate the mind, even between reading sessions. The exploration of societal issues related to parenthood, particularly within the context of a flawed child protective system, resonates deeply. Drawing on personal experiences working with parents undergoing reunification and foster care youth, the author skillfully sheds light on the systemic challenges faced by lower socio-economic status and families of color. The novel's thought-provoking nature elevates it beyond mere entertainment, prompting readers to reflect on real-world injustices long after the book is closed.

"The School for Good Mothers" is a powerful exploration of motherhood, morality, and social injustice. While the plot may experience occasional pacing issues, the rich character development and the book's profound thoughtfulness make it a compelling and relevant addition to the speculative fiction genre. Jessamine Chan has crafted a novel that not only entertains but also serves as a catalyst for introspection on critical societal issues.

Happy reading!
